The initial print run of The Walking Dead #1 had the colors for the "MATURE READERS" warning printed in the wrong sequence so that the black lettering was printed on top of the white, which disappeared. This was noticed and corrected so the black on subsequent issues adds some shadow/depth to the white letters.
The “white letter” and “black letter” covers are regarded as separate issues by collectors, and the “black letter” cover is regarded by some as the “first print”. Both versions are however essentially the same initial print run/publication date.
Estimates for the numbers of each version vary from 50% of each down to only 15% “black letters”. Robert Kirkman has suggested that the “white letter” cover is rarer, but secondary market numbers suggests this is the more common version. The truth is no one knows.
